This portrait has been made famous by the enigmatic smile which the painter has captured on canvas. This painting was started by Leonardo in the early 1500s but was completed years later just before his death. The painting is of Lisa de Giaconda who was the second wife of a silk merchant. She bore him six children and also raised his son from a previous marriage. The painting became famous many centuries after the demise of Lisa.
