Gay people have been granted considerable freedom in the country of Romania and the country has made changes in its laws pertaining to lesbians, gays and trans-genders recently. People belonging to Gay community are granted equality in the constitution of marriage like heterosexuals in the year 2007. The country has now recognised and granted recognition to the homosexuals in 2007 after becoming a member of European Union.
Earlier homosexuality was considered a criminal offence in the country of Romania, and gays were not allowed to carry any such act. Gay acts were decriminalised in the year 2001 after strong pressure from the countries of the European Council. Two very popular Gay community events; Cluj-Napoca’s Gay Film Nights and the Bucharest’s annual GayFest pride parade held in Romania are popular among heterosexuals through out the world. The Bucharest’s annual Gay Fest 2008 pride parade is a very popular gay event held for a week in the month of May.
It was started in the year 2007 when it was organised for the first time during 3rd to 9th May. This event features many programmes for the gay community of this country like a Gay parties, theatre shows and seminars and discussions about the rights and problems of this community. A gay parade was also incorporated in this festival for the very first time in the year 2005. A Miss Travesti is also chosen in the Bucharest Gay fest pride parade and there is huge competition among the Gay Romania community to win this title.
